“You get to hear a lot of stories and people’s situations currently. Some are homeless due to a change of circumstances, some due to their rental history.”
This is a reflection from one of the New Zealand property managers who responded to last year’s Tenancy Skills Institute’s survey asking why tenancies were at risk in the private rental market.
It highlights the potential lasting impact on a household when they exit a tenancy on unfavourable terms. It also underscores why our research, which seeks to understand the challenges and risks in the private rental market, is so important for informing our homelessness prevention and early intervention strategies.
In 2026, we are delighted to share that the Real Estate Institute of New Zealand is partnering with us for this year’s survey, as we continue this research with input from their extensive network of New Zealand property managers.
Thank you to REINZ for their support as we unpack what has changed in the Australian and New Zealand private rental markets, and what remains the same 12 months on.
