Homelessness Prevention and Early Intervention

28 May 2026

Homelessness prevention and early intervention – the theme of this week’s Queensland Homelessness Conference in Cairns.

Yesterday, our CEO Paul, as a Board Member of Homelessness Queensland, joined Mafa from Youth Link to chat with Charlie McKillop on the ABC Radio Far North Breakfast Show about why this year’s conference theme is so important for Queensland.

Sharing insights from a local Cairns-based perspective plus Queensland-wide insights, Paul and Mafa detailed how services within the sector aim to work together to support people at risk of or experiencing homelessness. From access to crisis accommodation and immediate housing responses funded by the Department of Housing and Public Works or pathways into the private rental market.

They also discussed the reasons and magnitude of ‘hidden homelessness’ across the state, including early insights from the Tenancy Skills Institute’s 2026 Annual Survey of Property Managers, which has found that almost 1 in 10 Queensland private rental properties, across nearly 32,000 tenancies, are at risk of failing right now.

Highlighting why Homelessness Queensland’s PIVOT Movement launch this week of the ‘Queensland Early Intervention and Prevention Roadmap’ has never been more timely or important.

Thanks Charlie for your continued interest in the experience of homelessness within our community and for discussing ways we can work together to prevent it from happening in the first place.
