Today is National Close the Gap Day.

19 March 2026

A day when we can reflect on the progress we have made as a community to reduce disparities in health, education, employment, housing, and justice outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples.

Here at inCommunity Inc., we remain committed to doing our part in creating positive change in the lived experience of First Nations Peoples.

As a specialist housing and homelessness service, we note there is a significant over-representation of First Nations Peoples accessing our services. The Australian Government’s Productivity Commission’s Closing the Gap Information Repository outlines that since 2016-2017, the rate of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people experiencing homelessness and receiving specialist homelessness support has increased across all age groups in 2024-2025.

We believe our most powerful tool for positive change is homelessness prevention through education, especially when we know that stable housing often improves health and access to employment and educational opportunities.

In 2025, through the Tenancy Skills Institute, 24.5% of students who engaged with our courses identified as Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander, ensuring each of these students learned skills to improve their access to the private rental market and stable housing.

So we acknowledge the importance of today, as part of our efforts to re-enliven the conversation around closing the gap, emphasising the infinite possibilities for our community when we actively engage in genuine partnership with First Nations Peoples.
